Interesting. I'm looking forward to seeing how the story progresses switching back and forth between the two girls.
Thanks for posting these~

So is Cecile Creole? Just curious since it is New Orleans and I can't imagine African Americans (even free ones) interacting with white people like bffs in the south in the 1850s.

Apparently, Cecile is Gens de Couleur Libre, a free person of colour. Yep, stretches credibility to have a relationship between them a "friendship." If Marie Grace is French, as in newly arrived from France, it is slightly less wtf. If she is American, it is a visit to wishful thinking land.

I'm with you on that one. Either Cecile is Creole, Marie-Claire is French (and ignorant of the racial lines in the South), and/or both.

I'm having a hard time imagining the friendship between a black girl and while girl in the 1850s South, but that issue notwithstanding, this looks intriguing. I've always been fascinated by that culture, and I am dying to visit New Orleans and be there for Mardi Gras one day, so I can't wait to see how they write this story.

Interesting. The books sound interesting, I probably won't buy any of the doll products but I look forward to reading.

TREND BUCK. It was actually not as rare as people think for blacks and whites to be friends or even best friends prior to SUPER LIBERATION 1960s. First of all N'awlins wasn't quite as bad as most of the south, due to major French influence, being a port city, and there being a lot of mixed people there. It's not wholly beyond the realm of possibility for them to be friends, even best friends. Most people then who put those harsh lines between PoC and where those trying to hold slave lines in strictness, but there's always been people who gave giant middle fingers to the rules. Stating that there's no possibility is like saying that there's no possibility that slaves learned to read before the end of the Civil War, and we all know that's not true.

Either way, I'll probably buy Cécile first, all the books, and then Marie-Grace's things.

Haha, I skipped the comments to post my own OOOH YAY so saw yours before I saw the ones above (because that's how it fell out), and was like "what, people are skeptical of friendship across races in New Orleans in the 1850s? seriously?"

I still think it's kind of sketchy on AG's part that they come out with a new Black character, and she has to share the spotlight with a White character, but I never thought the concept was wrong or anything. Crazy.

I didn't say no possibility, but such a friendship certainly is unlikely given the historical context. It is a feel good plot that has the feel good Disney touch, is all.
Me too, in that same order.

Oooo, I was wondering how they were going to handle the two meet books. This is an interesting setup. I'll be curious to see how the alternation works, though it sounds like there's enough BFFery that there won't be huge gaps from story to story. The spectre of yellow fever hanging over all the goings on sounds ominously cool, but I don't know how much I like all the emphasis on OMGYOUGUYSORPHANS! Meh, it'll probably be fine.

Thanks for sharing!

Thanks for posting. I'm curious to see how the story is played out between the two characters between the books.

PS: holy moly but the illustration of Marie-Grace on that first cover is photoshoptastic. Really, both of the first two covers look flat with skewed perspective (maybe they just need a new artist) compared to the other four.

From other pictures, the artwork used for the girls on the Meet covers is the same that was used for their paper dolls (like the exact same pics), so that might explain the weird flat-ness.

So, thoughts on the possibility of Addy retiring next year because of this?

[info]the1butterfly

May 22 2011, 22:30:15 UTC 1 year ago

I'm already worried about it- I've got my Molly retirement plan all ready, and I'll be so annoyed if they take Addy instead.

This is about 50% why I am uncomfortable with the shared story thing.

I'm thinking Molly's first. I don't have anything to support that, just a feeling. I thought she'd be gone before Lissie, to be honest. I think she's splitting Kit/Ruthie sales, too, which would make AG cranky.

Actually I'd almost wonder about losing Josefina before Addy.
